Beezie Madden to ride Judgement for final appearance at Syracuse Invitational

Celebrated horse’s career to be honored in final public appearance during Animal Planet Sporthorse Cup

October 21, 2009 (Syracuse, NY) – Judgement, Olympic Gold Medalist Beezie Madden’s long-time partner, will make his final appearance before fans in a ceremony to be held on Sunday, November 1 during the Animal Planet Sporthorse Cup at the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Touranment. The storied 18 year-old dark bay stallion is a two-time winner of the Cup, and arguably one of the most successful American bred stallions in show jumping history.

Madden, who has ridden the horse to world fame, will ride Judgement once again into the arena for a ceremony and retrospective of his career that will include Judgement’s owner and breeder Mary Alice Malone of Iron Spring Farm. The Cup will begin at 2 p.m. and the ceremony will take place during phases II and III.

“It will be a bittersweet moment for me, riding Judgement into the ring for the last time,” commented Madden. “We thought it was appropriate to do in front of his Syracuse fans where he certainly loved to jump. I will miss competing with him, but it is the right thing to do for him, and I couldn’t ask for more from him than he has already given.”

Judgement will be stabled in the Exhibition Hall at the Tournament hosted at the Oncenter in Syracuse from Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1st. Fans and admirers will have the opportunity to meet him there, take photographs and offer best wishes. This will be his last public appearance before being retired to his owner’s farm in Pennsylvania where he will be bred and relax among the rolling hills and green pastures.

Judgement’s successful career is legendary. The stallion has competed in the USA, Canada, France, Ireland, England, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Germany, Malaysia and the Netherlands. He represented the U.S. on ten Nations Cup Teams and competed in two World Cup Finals. He was the first American bred and born stallion to top $1,000,000 and the first to be officially recognized by the KWPN (Dutch Warmblood Association). He jumped at the Grand Prix level for 10 years. Other notable honors include: 2005 Chronicle of the Horse Show Jumper of the Year, 2005 nomination for KWPN Horse of the Year, and 2004 FEI Horse of the Year North America KWPN.

Tickets are available for the Animal Planet Sporthorse Cup and all featured Tournament competitions (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7 PM; Saturday at 2PM and at 7PM; and Sunday at 2PM) range from $10.00 to $25.00 and are available through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) and the Oncenter Box Office (315-435-2121). Competitions not listed above as ticketed are free.

In addition to the competition in the arena, the Tournament offers a free Equestrian Expo with shopping, dining, exhibits, children’s activities, live entertainment, and a host of educational demonstrations and lectures.

Two CNY colleges get $500k grants for equine centers

Madison County (WSYR-TV) – One million dollars is on the way to two local colleges.

Both Morrisville and Cazenovia colleges were granted half a million dollars each to upgrade their horse facilities.

Cazenovia College’s Center for Equine Business Development is now in the works thanks to the new $500,000 state capital grant.

“We’ll bring experts in to do workshops and clinics that also respond to the queries that people are making in terms of what they need,” says Cazenovia College President Mark Tierno.

In addition to offering equine business-related solutions, the center will also be a place of research and figuring ways to promote industry growth.

The college will also use the funds to build a new heating system for their equine facility.

“We have to keep an arena damp in order to keep the dust down, so when its 15 degrees outside, it really does feel too frigid inside to even work animals and to do clinics,” Tierno says.

A short drive down the road is Morrisville College, where they’re planning to use their $500,000 to purchase a state-of-the-art hyperbaric chamber, helping the college to become a horse rehab destination.

“It’s a chamber that increases oxygen and this chamber under pressure, so that if you have an open wound or stomach ailment an animal or a human, this helps with the healing process,” says SUNY Morrisville President Dr. Ray Cross.

Not only will the grants help both Cazenovia and Morrisville colleges, the investment is also expected to give a major boost to central New York’s economy, creating more jobs in the industry.

“We think of Kentucky, but upstate New York has tremendous potential, and we think with this kind of investment it can really kick start some economic stability,” says State Senator David Valesky.

The colleges are expected to receive the funds by the end of this month. The hyperbaric chamber should be completed by next summer.

Man, horse rescued from Pinal sinkhole

A man and his horse fell into a 10 foot sinkhole just outside of Florence on Thursday morning, Rural Metro Fire Department said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was walking his horse through some brush when the horse fell into a sinkhole. The man then fell on top of the horse.

He was able to get out of the hole without assistance, but it took the Rural Metro Fire Department close to two hours to get the horse out of the hole.

Mesa Pipeline and Mesa Gas assisted the fire department by bringing backhoes to the scene to rescue the horse, said Chuck Fitzgerald the battalion chief for Rural Metro Fire Department.

There were no reported injuries to the man or the horse, said Fitzgerald.

A number of sinkholes have been reported in Pinal County, apparently caused by subsidence as the water table has fallen because the drought.
